fursuit care guide

Keep your fursuit clean!

( English )

Introduction

Good fursuit care is essential, and that entails maintenance and precaution that begins just before putting on the suit. With proper care, your fursuit will last you for many years. This guide is predestined to keep your fursuit fresh and well-groomed at all times. We recommend that you print this guide and keep it for later use and reference.

Before fursuiting

  • We recommend wearing underarmor or a lycra suit underneath during performance to keep you cool and comfortable. The lycra material helps to wick away sweat from your body, but also helps not to soak so much of it into the fur of your bodysuit. Wearing the balaclava will help keep the sweat out of your eyes during performance, as well as keep your hair contained and out of your face. Wash the functional clothing and balaclava at least once before wearing it for the first time to avoid color leaks due to sweat.Black clothing can bleed in a purple / bluish color and ruin the backside of the fur.

  • Invest in a good comb or bristle brush. We recommend a pet hair brush with steel prongs (with or without ball tips) or a brush with synthetic bristles. The fursuit should be brushed before and after use. This helps to prevent the fur of the fursuit from becoming matted. Your fursuit will lose fur over time, this is normal but don’t overdo it. Using the brush always rips and tears the fur fibers right out of the backing, so use it very seldom elsewhere on your fursuit. Remember, this fur does not grow back!

  • Have a good sense of your body and respect your surrondings before performing on fursuit. Take breaks once in a while, take yourself a bath, have a good meal, hydrate well and before, during and after perfoming. Wearing and performing in a fursuit can be more exhausting on your body that regular work-outs. Be aware that consuming alcohol before and during wear of your fursuit will dehydrate you much faster than usual, so be sure to be cautious. Removing your head, hand paws and unzipping the upper portion of your bodysuit will help your body expel any excess heat built up during wear and performance.

And have fun!

Disinfect your fursuit

We recommend a mixture of isopropyl alcohol and distilled water in 50/50 proportions in a spray or any other disinfectant purchase to us or anybody to use on all fursuit parts immediately after use, paying close attention to areas with a high sweat concentration. Protect your fursuit head's eyes from chemicals during all cleaning procedures. Many cleaning agents can damage the paint or finish of your eyes. Avoid using this mixture on materials, airbrushed and painted parts, since it may severely fade or lose its varnish. Silicone and plastic are safe to clean with this mixture, unless acrylic and varnish that are not safe.Disinfectant spray used regularly takes care of any unpleasant odors. You will sweat while wearing certain items. Sweat contains traces of skin oils and water, and odors come from the bacteria growing in the sweat. So it is important to eliminate the growing of bacteria to avoid an odor.
When you disinfect the suit or head, do not wear again until it has completely dried!

Spot-clean your fursuit

Accidents can ocurr while you are performing, and it’s ok! Use a damp, cold cloth to remove dirt or spots that appear on the suit. It is important to pay attention to the grain of the fur; you will wipe or rub the cloth in the direction the fur goes. If water doesn't do the trick, try a mixture of baking soda and water: create a thin paste, apply to soiled fur, and massage in gently. Then, remove it again with a damp cloth. You can use Folex or a carpet cleaner to clean-spot your fursuit in case of accident too.If you have the possibility to invest in a Bissell machine, it is your best option to clean fursuit stains. We recommend the Green Machine or the Spotclean with cold water and the cleaner that comes with the machine or a little detergent for delicate clothes.

Deep-clean your fursuit

Use detergent for delicate clothing or neutral soap (no PH). Don’t use softener neither dryer machine to clean or dry your fursuits. Drain water little by little if neccesary with a towel or by hand. Do not pull or rub aggressively. The fur is weaker in this state. For the head, you need to clean it by hand, with cold water and in a shower or bathtub. (This item is not suitable for washing machine due to own small parts). Avoid water in eyes as much as possible. (They can bend with moisture) If you have the possibility to invest in a Bissell machine, it is your best option to also deep-clean fursuit stains. We recommend the Green Machine or the Spotclean with cold water and the cleaner that comes with the machine or some detergent for delicate clothes. For other parts, such as bodysuit, hadpaws, feetpaws, tail, etc you can use a washing machine in cold water and with centrifugation. Keep your bodysuits inside-out, zipped-up and take out the fillings or padding and wash it out separately. If there’s any hidden zip, there are items to clean it separately.

Drying your fursuit

Dry all the fursuit parts in a well-ventilated room and dry using a high velocity fan as possible. We recommend at least one to three days to fully dry. In exteriors, dry all the fursuit parts in a shaded part, without direct sun.Prop the head to get air circulation and dry thoroughly with a fan that fits the neck. The bodysuit can be hung from the shoulders. Handpaws must be hung from the wrist, with the fingers pointing down. Armsleeves must be hung from the elastic strap, separately. The tail must be hung from the straps, where you'd put a belt through. Both indoor and outdoor feetpaws can either be hung from the ankles. If hanging the suit to dry, make sure it is not pulling or particularly heavy in any areas, or the fabric may stretch. If this is happening, just lay the suit out horizontally instead and drain water little by little if neccesary with a towel or by hand. Do not pull or rub aggressively. The fur is weaker in this state. On a laundry rack / clothes horse, waves can appear in the fur, be aware of that.
Brushing the fursuit after it is dry will ensure a nice fluffy look for the next time you wear it!

Storage

Please let the fursuit dry well before packing it in a closed box, otherwise it could start to mold. Storing the fursuit properly is important to preserve the items. Store items in a cool, dry, and dark area. This way you'll avoid any sort of dust or dirt from open spaces. Plastic laundry tubs are ideal to store items, if possible. If not, you may either fold them neatly and put on a shelf or in a drawer, or you may hang them up. Be sure not to bunch them up or store them too tightly. The furs on the items may crinkle. Make sure everything is 100% dry before being stored.

By following this guide, you will be able to enjoy your fursuit or accessory for years of use. Do not forget that these items are hand-made, so it is pertinent to take care of them if you want a longer life from them! These are our characters or fursonas; essentially, a representation of ourselves. So if you neglect care of your items, it reflects who you really are! Enjoy and take care of your suit just as you take care of yourself.

¡Y a divertirse!

Desinfecta tu fursuit

Prepare these things in advance: First, you should have visual references or ideas for the character you would like to create and read the TOS (terms of service) so that you know how we will work. Second, you need to make sure you have the financial means to order something that will cost a lot on your budget. The base prices appear within the quote form. We highly recommend saving upfront, being not only responsible and safe, but we tend to favor people who can pay everything upfront or with fewer payments quickly. Third, after confirming the slot with us and finishing paying the invoice, you should be ready if you request a fullsuit because you will need to create a DTD (duct tape dummy) and if you request parts, measure yourself with a tape measure and you must send it to us asap.
Follow the instructions shown in this diagram for how to make this DTD.
You will need help from one or more extra people to do it!

1) Several rolls of duct tape, scissors, a black permanent marker, paper towels or toilet paper and disposable painter overalls. Before you begin, get as many people as you can to help. You can not do this on your own. The process will take 20-60 minutes. Don’t forget to use the restroom beforehand! You will be cutting away your outer layer of clothing in the last step. Be sure to wear old or unwanted clothes, as they will be destroyed and thrown away. Thin, easy to cut clothing works the best.
2) With your helpers, start tearing the duct tape into small pieces and begin wrapping the person little by little. Start taping at the crotch and work your way up. Make sure you keep your legs and arms apart throughout this process (T-pose) When you move around and create holes, just fill them over with more duct tape. Throughout the entire process, you may move around a little for your own comfort. You should be able to bend slightly, wobble around on your feet, and move your arms. Do not over-stretch, but you should be able to have a little freedom of movement.
**3) **Be sure to place the duct tape onto the person so that it fits to their body rather than the loose fitting clothing. The clothing is just there so the duct tape can be cut off easily from the person. Be sure not to wrap it so tightly that it will be uncomfortable or cut off blood circulation. Start wrapping the upper body all the way up to the neck. When you start wrapping your chest, make sure you have a nice full breath so you do not constrict your breathing. (*) If you have a collar or a hood attached to the overall, go ahead and cut it up and tape and use paper up to the neck. Make sure the entire neck is covered both in front and back and forms a circle around the neck.
4) Keep your arms extended and start working from the shoulder towards the wrist. Arms should be straight, not bent, they should be parallel to the ground like a "T" pose. Don't let your arms point towards the ground. You can rest your hands on someone's shoulders or hold sticks, brooms, or tall objects perpendicularly if your arms start to get tired. Again, be sure to tape the person's body shape. Your feet should be shoulder width apart. (*) There are times when the overall does not reach the person's armpit. This is solved by cutting a corner in the overall, protecting the skin with rolls of paper and carefully taping. This is especially important to maintain the shape of the arms. Be sure not to leave empty gaps without tape.
5) While taping your arms and legs, the clothing you have worn may have been pulled or stretched. If you were not able to tape all the way down to your wrists and ankles, wrap the rest of yourself with toilet paper or a paper towel and then duct tape over it.
6) If the job is done well, the person will look like this. If there is a lack of space to tape or you need to secure several areas, leave at least two layers of duck-tape. Now comes the most crucial part so keep your attention.
7) Once you are done with the taping, have your helpers draw down both sides of your body with a marker. Mark the beginnings and ends with a T and place an “X” every few centimeters will help us be able to tape the dummy back together after you are cut out. This is very important, so be sure not to forget! Also add the knee, elbow and tail position markings with a circle and a cross inside, as shown in the diagram. Carefully cut the person out of the DTD, following the drawn lines. Go slowly, and make sure not to pinch them or cut their skin. Only cut just enough so that you can slide out of the DTD.
8) After exiting the DTD, you can send us the DTD as is (unassembled) or you can join the marks again, respecting the T and the circular marks not to cover them with tape. After this, the DTD must be tagged with the name and can be folded and shipped in a box.
